Hardware Security Modules (HSM) are the bedrock hardware security devices that keep the digital world safe to use. Trusted by banks, public institutions, government agencies and corporates, HSM devices ensure that the digital services we all use every single day such as; POS transactions, mobile payments, IOT devices, credit cards, passports, 5G networks, SSL and DNS, and much more, are kept secure.
The EDGE Pro Plus HSM device was intended as a back-office unit that acted as the central secure gateway hub between a convenience store site and the outside world. A key feature of the FlexPay 6 system is the ability for store owners to extract business critical data and insights and to deploy software updates and screen media in real time through cloud based plug-and-play apps. The EDGE Pro Plus unit would ensure this could be done remotely and securely by bringing together the Electronic Payments Server (EPS) and the Forecourt Site Controller functions into a single product, and to securely deliver the full suite of FlexPay 6 SAAS offerings.
Existing products were basically sheet metal boxes designed for installing into 19″ racks and do not typically reflect the sophisticated role that they play. The industrial design of the new enclosure needed to establish a cohesive design language that aligned with the existing OPT products. The values the new design needed bring out included; accessible and serviceable, familiar and expected, detailed and precise, innovative and modern, reliable and durable, and secure and protected.
Alternative mounting methods were key, not every convenience store had space for a 19″ rack cabinet. While the product was designed so two units could fit into a 19″ rack side-by-side on a custom tray, options for desk mounting and wall mounting were also developed.
Thermal management was also a key consideration. The unit does not use a fan, so has excellent passive venting, designed to be unobtrusive and to work whether the unit is mounted vertically on a wall or horizontally on a benchtop. The final vent tessellations drew inspiration from the chevrons on the Invenco logo. A metal mounting bracket facilitated the mounting options, and provided additional strain relief for cables, because nobody wants a site to go down because a cable got kicked out.
The Product Owners were very happy with the design, they had only been expecting a variation on a sheet metal box.
